That is the question – that is what we are going to look at. But, first let us take a quick poll starting with calorie counting. Stand up all those who want to spend the rest of their days, weeks, years, life even, counting their calories. Right, there is no sense you lot wasting any more time here – the door is over there, please close it quietly behind you. Now, has anyone heard of Calorie Shifting? Yes? No? You had better stick around then.

I find that calorie counting is too much like dieting. You agree? Only it is not dieting – it is starving – starving your body to try to make it lose weight – note the “TRY” in that statement! How many people here would go on a starvation diet? Not just think about it but really do it! OK, you can leave as well!

Most people know that every body (and everybody) requires a certain amount of calories. Most people have heard that if you reduce the number of calories that a body is given, that body will use up fat reserves instead. Normally calorie reduction is done by reducing the size of each meal or missing some meals altogether. Yes – you have done it too! While the body will use up some of those fat reserves for a few days, maybe even a few weeks, the body soon wakes up to what is happening. The body responds by reducing the number of calories that it consumes and stores what are now excess calories to cope with the famine that it thinks that it is facing. The result? Weight loss stops and may even become a weight gain. The diet fails! Of course there are also the side effects of this starvation dieting – hunger, weakness, feeling miserable; in some cases dizziness and headaches.

For a body to remain healthy, it must receive the correct types of calories at the correct times of the day. On a calorie counting diet the body is being deprived of those calories. So, calorie counting is dieting which is going to fail. Right? Right.

However, if the body cannot determine what your general eating pattern has been for the last few days, it cannot judge the number of calories that it is likely to receive. Therefore it cannot determine a constant calorie burn rate.

So, what is needed is a method to:

· vary what is eaten so that the number of calories consumed changes each day. This would mean that the body could not perceive any eating pattern;

· ensure that the body is also given the right type of calories (protein, carbohydrate and fat) at the right times so that it does not perceive a famine.

This method already exists – it is called calorie shifting.

So, what is calorie shifting? Calorie shifting varies the number of calories that are supplied to the body while still meeting the requirement to supply the correct types of food at the correct times. This is done by the proper selection of foods and ensuring that they are eaten at the correct times. There are no restrictions on the amount of food that is eaten, it just must be the correct types. Eating four meals per day aids this process of calorie shifting.

This eating pattern may sound restrictive, but compare it to calorie counting. Calorie counting limits the total amount of food that can be eaten. You have no choice – there is a limit. You also eat four times per day so avoiding those hunger pangs.
